Rocket City Cycle Belles
Founded in 2012 by Grace Ragland and Jana Payne, who were friends since college and began mountain biking together around 2003, the Rocket City Cycle Belles (RCCB) is a grass-roots women-only group for women interested in anything bike. Whether you've been thinking about taking up cycling or you're a die-hard competitor, we encourage you to jump in and share the passion. Here's what our founders and members say:
"I would like to see our community safer. And when more people are involved, the need for bike lanes gets noticed. There's strength in numbers." -Grace Ragland, who despite having been diagnosed with muscular sclerosis as a teen, excelled at cycling and became a nationally known mountain bike racer and coach. Grace passed January 2020, but we recognize her legacy in the RCCBs, NICA student racing, and many cycling-related successes in North Alabama.
"One of our common bonds is our love for cycling, mountain and road. We recognized a need for an all-women's group. You know, we thought an all-women's group would present a presumably less intimidating and competitive atmosphere for women cyclists on all levels of the sport." -Jana Payne
"It's all women in all stages of cycling. Some are novices and some are pros, but it doesn't matter." -Melissa Wood
No top-of-the-line fancy equipment required - just the desire to ride your bike. We encourage you to share your knowledge on our
RCCB Facebook
page; ask questions, post group ride info, ANYTHING that has to do with biking! We would love to see cool articles, pictures, equipment for sale, or spin class info. Even if you just want to have coffee and talk bike, please join us. The purpose of this group is to offer a safe and encouraging environment for women in every phase of cycling.
RCCB offers weekly all-women road and mountain bike rides for riders of varying levels throughout the warmer months of the year, socials year-round, and spin classes/support during those frigid winter months when it’s a little daunting to get outside!
